About us
Tiverton Adventure Playground is an inclusive dedicated 3.5-acre wooded site offering children between 8 and 13 (all welcome on family days) the opportunity to choose their own play – to get muddy, make dens and climb trees – or do nothing at all!
It is guided by the ‘Three Frees’ developed by Play England (https://www.playengland.org.uk), which means it is:
- Free of charge,
- Children are free to come and go, and
- Free to choose how they spend their time when they are there.
We are open (dependent on funding) in the 13 weeks of school holidays and selected days afterschool.
Staffing is carried out by a team of playworkers who take a minimal intervention approach, and rather than running activities are guided by what children want. We do not aim to sanitise children’s play experiences and offer instead a space that challenges children and takes into account the benefits of risk-taking, following guidelines from the Health and Safety Executive (https://www.hse.gov.uk/entertainment/childs-play-statement.htm) and Play Safety Forum (https://playlink.org/articles-issues/31-play-safety-forum-play-england.html).

We are linked into an international adventure playground movement, (click here for information on adventure playgrounds – https://londonadventureplaygrounds.org.uk/about-adventure-playgrounds/the-case-for-adventure-playgrounds/) all subscribing to the belief that play is essential to children, which is enshrined as a right in Article 31 of the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child (https://ipaengland.org).
